EDUCATION

 

In 1982 graduated from a Specialized Biology School in Moscow. In 1984-1985 attended Higher Literature seminars by L.A. Zhukhovitsky. In 1989 graduated from the Psychology Department of the Moscow State University, with specialization in Animal Psychology.

 

WORK HISTORY

 

From 1980 to present working at the Kandalaksha Nature Reserve.

 

Administers the Nature Reserve website from 2010.

 

Editing for First of September (Pervoye Sentyabrya), a publishing house that specializes in educational literature.

 

Freelance research work.

Member of the Russian Union of Writers ("Soyuz Literatorov") from 1991

 

AWARDS

 

Participates in Russian and international conferences on sea biology and history of science. Over 120 publications, mostly in ecology, nature preservation, and the history of science. Littoral Littorina - a major study of the history of White and Barents Sea biological stations - published in 2005 on CD.

 

Recipient of a grant from the Open Society Institute (Soros Foundation) in 1998 to write a series of articles on White Sea biological station under the common heading of The Worlds of White Sea.

 

Honorary Award for active participation in Nature Reserve Echo-98 ("Zapovednoye Ekho-98"), a nation-wide competition for best publications on the importance, activities, and problems of protected natural territories. Won third prize for an article submitted to this competition. 

 

Crystal Magpie ("Khrustalnaya Soroka") prize at the First Russian Journalist Competition for an article on Problems of Nature Reserves and National Parks.

 

Honorary award for active participation in the Nature Reserve Echo-2000 ("Zapovednoye Ekho-2000") event.

 

Recipient of the State Stipend for Literature and Art in 2001, 2002, and 2003.

 

2004 - Received a MacArthur Foundation grant to support her work on the project The History of Science as the Stories of Scientists (The History of Russian Biological Stations in the White Region and their Role in the Development of Marine Biology and in the Growth of Ecological Consciousness in Russian Society).

 

2006 - Awarded the first prize at the F.P. Shchtilmark competition "People n the History of Nature Reserves and Reserves in Life Stories of People".
